Minecraft XBLA refunds available to SDTV owners

Joystiq 22 May 2012, 1:00 am CEST

Image
Minecraft's XBLA port features local split-screen multiplayer - but only when played on an HDTV, a stipulation that wasn't ... stipulated very clearly. Microsoft announced two efforts to rebuild the shattered relationship between it and SDTV-owning fans who found themselves lacking in modes. The full (but brief) statement is after the break. First, Microsoft is now issuing refunds to affected customers who contact the publisher through customer support. Second, it is preventing other customers from being Mineshafted by adding clearer notification to the XBLA listing: "To experience split-screen functionality a high-definition television is required."

Patch to fix Street Fighter X Tekken patch incoming

Joystiq 21 May 2012, 11:50 pm CEST

As you may have noticed during online play, or perhaps heard about on an internet website, Street Fighter X Tekken's reccent Patch 1.04 introduced a major, game-breaking glitch, wherein any knife-like projectile will cause the game to hard freeze, should it come into contact with any fireball. "The development team is currently examining the problem and planning to patch the game as quickly as possible," said producer Tomoaki Ayano in a statement to Capcom Unity. "The patch to fix the glitch should be released by mid June." Patch 1.04 was originally released with the intention of correcting infinite combos and other game-breaking glitches that had been discovered.

Infinity Blade 2 getting free 'Vault of Tears' update on Thursday

Shacknews Recent Articles 21 May 2012, 11:30 pm CEST

Chair Entertainment's Infinity Blade 2 is still one of the best looking games you can play on an iThing. If you haven't played in a while, Chair has announced a new content update, coming this Thursday. Called 'Vault of Tears,' the update will bring a significant amount of new gameplay and goodies, and is absolutely free.

One of the more curious-sounding features included in the 'Vault of Tears' update for Infinity Blade 2 is a social one. Apparently, friends will be able to assist players of the game simply by liking and re-tweeting battle calls the player shares in-game. "Building upon the cooperative ClashMob challenges, players can now earn extra turns and invite their friends, family, and other non-Infinity Blade players to do in-game damage with the power of liking and re-tweeting battle calls â€" something that hasn't been done before," states the press release.

As far as the actual 'Vault of Tears' content goes, there's actually a pretty significant amount. The update will unlock new areas in the game, and add a new Treasure Map feature that will let players discover secret items, and a 'hidden ally.' Those looking for loot will also be happy to note that more than fifty new pieces of gear--ranging from weapons to rings--are also being added.

Of course, Infinity Blade is really all about battling imposing-looking enemies. Expect to find new foes like the "Moss Golem, Dark Fiend, Bog Giant, and Acolyte," inhabiting the world of Infinity Blade 2 when the free update launches later this week.

ThinkGeek selling SNES-style Wii Classic Controller

Joystiq 21 May 2012, 11:20 pm CEST

Image
The Super Famicom Classic Controller for Wii remains out of reach for everyone but Japanese Club Nintendo members (and eBay users, of course), but ThinkGeek is stocking a very close facsimile for $20. In fact, the Classic Super Famicom Controller for Wii is functionally identical to the Club Nintendo version. It plugs into your Wii Remote and lets you play Virtual Console games (or anything else that supports Classic Controller use and doesn't require analog sticks) with a controller designed to replicate the SNES pad. It even has the colorful face buttons of the Japanese controller. Right now seems like a questionable time to buy a Wii accessory, but you'd already be using it to play old games. The impending obsolescence of the Wii isn't necessarily a deal breaker. Besides, the Wii U uses Wii Remotes; a Classic Controller might come in handy with that as well.

Celery with Peanut Butter: The Snacktaku Review [Video]

Kotaku 21 May 2012, 11:00 pm CEST

In the comments section of my most recent Snacktaku review, a reader accused me of (and I am paraphrasing here) "eating nothing but crap". Perhaps this review of the healthy, wholesome combination of a vegetable no one likes and chocolate's pale understudy will convince him otherwise. More »

Fruit Ninja celebrates 2-year anniversary with new powerups, free iOS codes

Joystiq 21 May 2012, 10:50 pm CEST

Image
Fruit Ninja might not really need updating - it's pretty feature-complete if there is fruit for you to slice, and you can slice it - but Halfbrick is adding content to the mobile game anyway in honor of its two-year anniversary. The new update will be live May 24. Gutsu and Truffles join the cast (in other words, Sensei), bringing with them a shop where you can purchase powerups that add time, deflect bombs, or explode, in exchange for Starfruit, a new currency that you earn in-game. Speaking of currency, Halfbrick is handing out the iPhone game at no cost right now on its anniversary website. The offer is limited, but we'd be surprised if this Starfruit update weren't leading into an optional microtransaction-based system like that in Jetpack Joyride.

Rumor: Castlevania: Mirror of Faith for 3DS outed

Shacknews Recent Articles 21 May 2012, 10:45 pm CEST

Konami's "Castlevania: Blank of Blank" series has done incredibly well on the DS, and it appears the publisher is looking to expand that formula to the system's successor. A leak from the company's E3 schedule includes a game called "Castlevania: Mirror of Faith" for 3DS. Speculation has it that this game will tie in with a rumored Lords of Shadow sequel.

According to the rumor, David Cox and Enric Alvarez, the producer and writer/director of Lords of Shadow, respectively, are involved with this new project. If true, it's likely to tie into the well-received rebooted universe.

Dutch site N1ntendo spilled the beans on Konami's E3 schedule. The page has since been pulled, but not before NeoGAF could remark upon their findings. With E3 only a few weeks away, it won't be long until we see if this rumor holds any merit.

That Disturbing Photo of Owen With a Wheelbarrow has Somehow Become Even More Disturbing [Wtf]

This picture has become a meme here on Kotaku, and a favorite callback joke in our weekly Kotaku 'Shop Contest. Ghost Recon Commander deploys to Facebook

Joystiq 21 May 2012, 10:20 pm CEST

Ghost Recon's tactical tour of Facebook begins, with Ghost Recon Commander hitting the social media site earlier today. Developed by John Romero's social studio Loot Drop, Commander is linked with Ubisoft's free-to-play Ghost Recon Online and the upcoming Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Ghost Recon Commander is an isometric, tactical-strategy game within the popular Tom Clancy license, featuring ten "replayable missions, three difficulty levels and dozens of weapons for players to choose from." By playing Commander, players can unlock "exclusive weapons, weapon skins and bonuses to use while playing Ghost Recon: Future Soldier and Ghost Recon Online." There are also additional "benefits" to linking the products, such as unlocking characters in Commander by playing Future Soldier. It is advisable to check it out; however, we wouldn't recommend poking anyone on the battlefield. One of you won't make it out alive. Joystiq has contacted Ubisoft on the release date for Commander's mobile version, which was announced in April.

Board game Dungeon Twister coming to PS3

Shacknews Recent Articles 21 May 2012, 10:00 pm CEST

A video game adaptation of board game Dungeon Twister is spinning its way towards PlayStation Network on PS3 this summer, via French studio Hydravision. The turn-based strategy sends players deep into, of course, a dungeon, for rollicking adventure and rotating hijinks.

It's no normal dungeon though, oh no, rather one divided into squares which can be spun around to change the layout. You'll build a team of four from eight different classes, each with their own abilities, then try to either escape the dungeon or beat up the other team.

As well as a solo mode, Dungeon Twister will pack online multiplayer. Here's a trailer:

Your Favorite Video Game Characters, Only Now They're Undead [Freaky Fan Art]

Kotaku 21 May 2012, 10:00 pm CEST

People often complain that there's an overabundance of zombie-based video games, or that zombies are the new bacon, overindulged in to the point of nausea. Judging by pieces like Deviant artist Dantemustdie00's "Sonic Zombies", perhaps we're just injecting the undead into the wrong titles. More »
